Macbeth: Villain or Tragic Hero? 
This is the question that you will continue to ask yourself as you read Macbeth.  Macbeth takes place in Scotland during a time of war, deceipt, and treachery.  Read here for the real history of Macbeth.  After you have read "The Real Macbeth and His Times," answer the following questions (Assignment #1) on a piece of paper:

1. Who was the culprit behind Donwald killing King Duff?  How do you think that Shakespeare may have adapted this for his own play?

3. Why was war and slaughter acceptable during this time period?

4. Characterize the "real" Macbeth...upstanding guy or not?
